Claire Givens: Singing Many Genres in Many Spaces

 

I sat down with the soft-spoken but passionate musician, Claire Givens, over coffee on a balmy September day in one of the sunny conversation pits outside The Station in Mid-City. Despite the heat, and the fact that she had been up late the previous night opening for Thundercat with her band, People Museum, she spoke to me about her newest projects, her musical upbringing, and her favorite opera.

Givens is the lead singer and lyricist for People Museum, a frequent collaborator with MoPodna, a nationally recognized choral singer, featured soloist in Eric Whitacre’s virtual choir, and a member of the trio Ocean Boyfriend, which started life playing covers of the quirky sister harmony trio The Roches. People Museum’s newest release is the EP “Destruction Of, Vol.1,” inspired by the work of artist Louise Bourgeois…
